An allergy is an abnormal reaction to an ordinary harmless substance called an allergen. Allergens can be breathed in, swallowed or touched.

Types of Allergic Diseases
Hay Fever
Symptoms: sneezing, runny and itchy nose, watery itchy eyes, itchy ears and throat.
Common Causes: pollens, molds, dust mites, animal danders, cockroaches
Contact Dermatitis
Symptoms: itchy and inflamed skin, blisters
Common Causes: cosmetics, medications, metals (chrome, mercury), latex, poison ivy, oak
Asthma
Symptoms: wheezing and coughing, shortness of breath, tightness of the chest
Common Causes: pollutants , tobacco smoke , fumes, pollens, molds, dust mites, animal danders, cockroaches
Rhinitis
(non-allergic) Usually experienced by people with asthma.
Symptoms: Headaches, stuffy nose, post-nasal drip, sneezing
Common Causes: overuse of nasal sprays, weather changes, fumes, cold or flu sinus infection
Eczema
Symptoms: itchy red rash, scaly rash, tiny blisters which may break open and crust over.
Common Causes: Heat, dryness, sweating, dust mites and or foods.
Hives
Symptoms: Red itchy welts on the skin, possible swelling of the face, lips and or throat
Common Causes: Foods (shellfish, berries, nuts , tomatoes), medications, sunlight, exercise, excessive rubbing.
Pollen Season
April is the beginning of Pollen Season; Pollens are in the air whenever trees, grasses or weeds are blooming.
Keep house and car windows shut during the spring and fall pollen seasons. Use your air conditioner more often when needed
Do not dry your laundry outside because it may collect pollens.
Avoid a windy day outside when pollen counts are high
Wear a dust mask when working in the yard
If you wish to spend time outdoors, try the beach or up in the mountains
